Oxo kitchen products

So my son broke the bowl from my salad spinner. In an effort to be more green I called Oxo (Danesco) in Canada to try to replace the bowl rather than the whole thing. They said no problem they'd send me a new one free of charge. If that wasn't great enough, I received a whole new spinner! Completely free! Well worth the effort on calling, non?

Preschool Craft Ideas

7 Easy Art Projects for Preschoolers

By The Circle of Moms Editors - Apr 12, 2011
preschooler, arts and crafts
On the hunt for easy and affordable arts and crafts projects to entertain your preschooler? These seven projects are recommended by Circle of Moms members for sheer fun factor, but they also help preschoolers unleash their creativity and master fine motor skills.

1. Body Tracing

“When you're 4 you want to be...BIGGER!” says Sylvia M., explaining why body tracing is so incredibly entertaining for preschoolers. “Show him just how big he actually is by having a friend or sibling or even Mom trace his whole body on paper. Brown paper rolls like they have in restaurants work best. Otherwise, use regular paper, trace each body section and collage them together like a puzzle. Then color!!!” Afterwards, hang the finished piece on the bedroom door.

2. Homemade Bird Feeders

Creating simple bird feeders can be a thrill for animal-loving preschoolers. As Megan A. shares: “We just made bird feeders using pine cones (from the neighborhood), birdseed and peanut butter. The kids had a blast and the feeders attracted a ton of birds.”

3. Torn Paper Art

All you need for Kelly W.'s easy craft project is colored paper and glue. The former preschool teacher shares: “I would quite often draw a simple shape…and give them strips of colored paper, which the children would tear into small pieces…They would ‘paint’ the drawn object with glue and stick on the small bits of paper."

4.Textured Collages

Other moms suggested creating collages with paper and other household items, ranging from pasta pieces to cotton balls. As Tina C. shared: “Old fabric and buttons works great…I bought a huge tin of old buttons at an auction once and you won't believe how much fun the kids had with that stuff.”

5. “Sand” Art

“My daughter is almost 3 and she loves this one," shares Christina B., who recommended creating sand art with colored cereal. "You'll need Fruit Loops cereal, baby food jars, a funnel (or you can make one with a piece of paper) and baggies. Start with having your kids sort the cereal by color....then place each color in their own bag. Have them crush the cereal until it becomes fine (like sand) and then using the baby food jars and the funnel, have them create 'sand art' which you can give away as gifts.”

6. Felt Boards

Looking for an activity with minimal mess? Consider creating naturally clingy felt objects, which won't require glue. Kristi Q. shares: “Make a felt board (we tacked felt onto an old dry erase board) then you can have the kids draw shapes, numbers, cut out animals on the other pieces of felt - cut them out - and stick them to the felt board (kinda like refrigerator magnets).”

7. Painting

Painting is one of the most reliably entertaining preschooler activity. Myra M., mother of a three-year-old, advised: “Get out some water (-based) colours and lots and lots of paper and just let your girl go for it. Also, get some interesting textures to paint as well, like rocks, sticks, shells, etc.”

What's your favorite arts and craft project for preschoolers? Share in the comments below!

Green Tools of the Trade

Here's the shortlist of everyday items you can use to clean your home:

Baking soda: Also known as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is a natural substance that maintains the pH balance. Neutralizing both acids and bases, it actually eliminates odours rather than just covering them up.
Lemon: The acidity of lemons provides antibacterial and antiseptic properties for cleaning. Attack countertop stains by allowing lemon juice to sit on the stain for a few minutes, then scrub the area with baking soda.

Olive oil: Once called 'liquid gold' by Homer, olive oil is typically derived from the tree crop of the Mediterranean. Excellent for wood polishing -but use a bottle of inexpensive domestic olive oil and save the expensive Greek variety for your sauté.

White vinegar: Vinegar is a great natural cleaning product, as well as a disinfectant and deodorizer. The strong smell quickly dissipates as it dries.

Old newspapers: Read, then reuse (and subsequently recycle!) your old newspapers to clean mirrors and windows. Cuts down on the volume of paper towels used for cleaning.

Rags: Give your sad, stained fabric dishcloths, face cloths and T-shirts a second life by adding them to your rag basket. Washable items help eliminate the paper waste and throwaway cleaning pads.

Green Cleaning Concoctions

Here are some tried and tested alternatives to harsh cleaning products. I have used the floor cleaner and tub and tile cleaner for years with happy results. I'm really curious about the carpet deodorizer- cloves..... hmmmmm

CLEANING CONCOCTIONS
Sonia Mendes gets down and dirty to test-drive homemade cleaners:
Floor cleaner
  • ½ cup vinegar
  • 1 gallon water
  • Mix in a bucket to mop or scrub floors (Source: SavvyMom).
Writer's note: After a thorough sweep, I opt to try this out on the bathroom floor. I realize we don't actually own a mop anymore. So I get down on my hands and knees with some rags (which, incidentally, is not a bad way to go for a thorough spring clean). The result? Pretty impressive, if I say so myself.

Carpet deodorizer
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 4-5 crumbled bay leaves
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon ground cloves
Mix. Sprinkle on carpets. Let sit up to 24 hours and vacuum. For stains, sprinkle baking soda, rub in and let sit one hour. Scrub with stiff brush and vacuum out (Source: David Suzuki Foundation).Writer's note: I don't typically deodorize my carpets, yet I was curious to try this one. Since our house is fully carpeted, we're always vacuuming so it seemed an easy way to leave a fresh scent in the house. That it did -I sprinkled the deodorizer in a test area and then left for about three hours. When I returned, I thought the smell was great -like fresh Christmas baking. My husband, however, disagreed. He thought the scent was overpowering.

Cleaner for tub and tile
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
Scrub surfaces with baking soda slightly moistened with water. To remove mineral deposits around faucets, cover deposits with strips of paper towels soaked in vinegar. Let sit for one hour and wipe. (Source: SavvyMom).Writer's note: Using a baking soda scrub on my tub and sink worked great -it gave a good clean and rinsed away very easily. However, the strips of vinegar-soaked paper towel were a bit messy and I didn't like waiting an hour to go back to the spot.
